Imereti Police Chief Accused of Misconduct
Kutaisi

Members of the Repubilcan Party have accused chiefs of Imereti regional and Bagdati regional police Levan Kakhiani and Akaki Svintradze of torturing detainees and committing number of abuses. According to Liberty Institute’s Imereti officer Nino Gachava, Mikheil Chkheidze, 20 was detained by Bagdati district police on illegal possession of firearms on January 9.

According to Chkheidze, Imereti Regional Police chief Levan Kakhiani insulted him in preliminary detention cell. Following Ckhieidze’s attempt to respond, up to 10 police severely assaulted him.

Republican Party’s Tinatin Khidasheli informed that even after 24 days of the incident, Interior Ministry’s medical inspection confirmed trace of torture on Chkheidze’s body. Khidasheli also spoke of other kinds of violations in the case such as preventing the detainee from receiving proper medical care.

Chkheidze’s mother alleged that the incident should be connected with her husband’s business activities.

The Republican party appealed to the Prosecutor General’s Office to study issue of Kakhiani’s competence.
